What is Pilates?

Pilates is a unique method of exercise, nowadays practiced by millions of people all around the world, of different ages and backgrounds. It strengthens the body in a harmonic and well-balanced way, improves posture, balance, works on mobility and stability, and connects the body and the mind.

The man who created this method about a century ago, Joseph H. Pilates, was a pioneer: even if he lived in a completely different time, he understood the negative effects that a busy and stressful modern lifestyle has on posture, breathing, muscles and joints, as well as the importance of the deep muscles layers for body support.

His philosophy takes inspiration from the ancient Greek and Latin concept of a healthy mind in a healthy body, with movement  seen as an essential part of mental wellbeing: "physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness" he wrote.  In Pilates, body and mind are working in symbiosis, with the mind constantly guiding and controlling the movements.

The six pillars of Pilates are breath, control, centering, concentration, flow, and precision. They are omnipresent throughout the classes and the basis of movements.
